Part Nine: Merry Octobermas! Parts gifting gets into high gear for our project Chevy
It's not always who you know. It's who they know.

Some of those connections are already paying off in a big way for the Wheels of Dreams project car, a 1940 Chevrolet Master 85 two-door sedan that is currently receiving a street rod makeover. When completed, the Chevy will be raffled off, with all proceeds going to The Rainbow Society. (www.therainbowsociety.com) The Society grants wishes to Manitoba children living with a life-threatening illness.

It all started with how exactly to complete the engine, a 350 cubic-inch V8 crate motor from the generous crew at Vickar Community Chevrolet. We can't thank Dealer Principal Larry Vickar enough for the 290 horsepower mill, which carries a retail value of $2500. The next step for completion of the small block involved a significant raft of parts, which start to add up in a hurry. To keep things relatively simple, the Hillbilly Garage team, as well as the associates of the El Diablo Car Club, decided to keep the fuel delivery topping to a traditional carburetor, the fuel tank will not require any additional modifications. (Other than patching the massive hole in it.) Delivery of the fuel would be accomplished with a mechanical fuel pump. "It's the tried, tested, and true method for many street rods," said Park.

Enter FJO Racing Products. (www.fjoracing.com) Tucked away in an unassuming Charleswood storefront, Company President Fred Oberbuchner continues to design and produce engine management systems that are the talk of Hi-Po Town. Backed by years of experience in the aerospace and military fields, Oberbuchner's products can be boiled, frozen, even run over by the very car you're tuning. They simply don't break. That level of quality has caught the eyes of large performance companies, such as Holley Performance Products. Holley is one of FJO's largest customers.

Somewhere in my cluttered email boxes was a message sent to Gerald Oberbuchner, who handles the sales side for the  FJO world. With FJO already entrenched as the supplier for a custom digital dashboard for the Chevy, the suggestion was made to approach Holley, to find out if there might be the odd part that could be donated. We were hoping for valve covers. We got a lot more than that.

The big box that arrived this week has a wide selection from the brands underneath the Holley Performance Products banner. (www.holley.com) Here's the list:

Holley Street Avenger 4150 Carburetor: The classic "Double Pumper" has been upgraded for the new Millennium, with minimal installation fuss. Rated at 670 CFM, the Street Avenger boasts an advanced electric choke, adjustable vacuum secondary, and a proprietary fuel metering system that will give our Chevy plenty of grunt.

Holley Heavy Duty 110 GPH Mechanical Fuel Pump: Real estate is right with a V8 in a cavity where an inline six used to breathe. The fuel body casting on this Holley unit can be rotated, which makes it a cinch for the attachment of the fuel lines.
Weiand Action Plus Everbright Intake Manifold: The Street Avenger will sit atop this popular Weiand piece, with the added bonus of unique vacuum metalizing technology, with a protective clear powder coat. Translation: a very shiny thing. It's the high-polished look, without the high maintenance.

Holley Sure-Flow II Air Cleaner: Finished in triple-chrome plate, this compact triangular unit is just the ticket for underhood fit.

Holley Chevy Small Block Valve Covers: You can never have enough chrome. And it ain't a street rod until the chrome valve covers go on. Holley threw in the handy T-studs, for installation and removal ease.

Flowtech Ceramic-Coated Blockhugger Exhaust Headers: Like the name says, these headers fit right and tight to the engine block, which helps tremendously with any clearance issues. Glenn Scott and his team at Duals Muffler will be attaching the dual exhaust system. The headers boast mandrel bends, and 16 gauge tubing.

A hearty tip of the cap to Matt Held, Media and Trade Show Manager for Holley Performance Products in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Held's relationship with FJO was instrumental in making this impressive donation a reality.

Speaking of donations, our first anonymous benefactor has come through in fine style. About four weeks out are a full set of Fiberglass fenders for our Chevy. The metal ones are getting harder to find, and the amount of repairs needed to bring the original ones up to snuff would have put a severe dent in our timetable. This donation had a little help, with a wholesale deal through Showcars Bodyparts Unlimited in Toronto. (www.showcars-bodyparts.com) We've had additional inquiries from many local and out-of-town parties. We'll highlight these donations in the coming weeks. Remember; every part counts. If you like, you too can be a Mr. or Mrs. X, just like our fine fender friend.
